    Inspiring recovery

    After decades of recovery efforts and millions in taxpayer dollars, Howe Sound is coming back to life. The herring have returned, and with them, the salmon, sea lions, dolphins, and whales.

    Critical ecosystem services

    The Howe Sound watershed provides ecosystem services valued at $7.5 billion annually, including: food, clean water, a stable climate, protection from natural disasters, and a place to connect with nature.

    2021

    Howe Sound is declared as a UN Biosphere Region! With kudos to all the volunteers with the Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative for making this a reality.

    2019

    Hundreds of people create an orca out of umbrellas, to celebrate the return of orcas to Howe Sound. The resulting video was trending in papers across B.C. bringing provincial attention to our campaign to #ProtectHoweSound.

    2017

    My Sea to Sky, Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative, and Skwomesh Action kickstart the launch of our campaign to #ProtectHoweSound with a flotilla at the Stawamus Waterfront.

    2016

    Heart of Howe Sound: the Paddleboarders

    Paddleboarding on the waters of Átl’ḵa7tsem / Howe Sound has allowed me to have such an intimate perspective of this unique ecosystem. The paddleboard is the perfect tool to connect to the environment, and experience the breathtaking beauty and return of wildlife to the sound.

    I started swimming in Átl’ḵa7tsem / Howe Sound while training for my English Channel swim crossing in 2017, and I've absolutely fallen in love with the area. It's so close to Vancouver, yet these are some of the most desolate and wild places I’ve ever swam.

    I have spent the past 30 years out in Átl’ḵa7tsem / Howe Sound, climbing the sea cliffs, paddling, and spending time with my family. Returning to Howe Sound time and time again has really helped to calm my soul and instill me with a great sense of peace.

    Celebrating good news in Átl’ḵa7tsem / Howe Sound

    Átl’ḵa7tsem / Howe Sound Art Challenge … To celebrate World Oceans Day, students from K–12 were invited to submit artwork with the theme: Revitalization: collective action for the ocean. This is the second year that My Sea to Sky has hosted this competition, and it's one of my favourite projects.

    Our successes in 2021

    This is one of my favourite places in the world: the Stawamus River. Right now the coho are spawning, and there are salmon-coloured eggs buried in the river bed, American dippers hunting for them, and dead salmon frozen on the banks—if the eagles and bears haven't gotten to them first.

    There is something magical about Átl’ḵa7tsem / Howe Sound. Whether I'm exploring the shoreline or out on the water, I am always in awe of the life above and below the waves. I love spotting seals and sea lions, or the colourful sea stars that are now returning to Howe Sound's waters.
