What is happening?

In 2022 Woodfibre LNG applied to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada to weaken the conditions of its environmental assessment certificate to reduce the monitoring area for seals and sea lions by a shocking 98%, and to limit its responsibility for water pollution in Átl’ḵa7tsem / Howe Sound.

Woodfibre LNG has already had a leachate spill in 2016. Earlier this year, Woodfibre LNG was issued a warning that the project is non-compliant with the notification and submission requirements of its Environmental Assessment Certificate, and twelve of its conditions.

Despite thousands of letters from concerned citizens, Minister Steven Guilbeault has ignored the latest science, and prioritized the profits of a foreign-owned fossil fuel company over protecting the environment for Canadian citizens.

We need you to call, email, and tweet at Minister Guilbeault and let him know that he's earned our "seal of disapproval."

Tell him that you expect him to do everything he can to stop Woodfibre LNG, and to protect Átl’ḵa7tsem / Howe Sound.

How to call a Minister

Calling the Minister's office is easy, and it has a big impact. If you don't get to speak to a staff person, leave a message. Here's an example script:

Hi, my name is _____. I'm calling today because I am really concerned / upset / angry that Minister Guilbeault has allowed Woodfibre LNG to weaken the conditions of its environmental assessment certificate.

I'm disappointed that Minister Guilbeault ignored the latest science and let Woodfibre LNG reduce the monitoring area for seals and sea lions by a shocking 98%—from 7,322 metres to a mere 150 metres.

I'm very upset that Woodfibre LNG is not being held responsible for its water pollution.

I'm concerned that allowing Woodfibre LNG to weaken these conditions so they are "economically feasible" will set a dangerous precedent for any project that wants to cut costs at the expense of the environment.

The Minister has failed his mandate to protect the environment on behalf of all Canadians.

Share why you love Átl’ḵa7tsem / Howe Sound and why it's important to you.

If you voted Liberal in the last election, tell Guilbeault if this decision has changed your vote. Politicians seem to care about that.

Ask the staff to record your name and contact info so there is a record of your call.

And that's it! It's that simple! It helps if you practice what you want to say before you call, or write down the key points.
