I am boycotting the broken environmental assessment process for Woodfibre LNG’s second floatel amendment. Public engagement is meaningless and is treated as a checkbox on a form. This fails to highlight the extent of public opposition to the Woodfibre LNG project, and our concerns over the past eleven years have been dismissed and ignored. I have lost trust in the integrity of the environmental assessment process as government staff that were responsible for the initial approval in 2015 and the 5-year extension for Woodfibre LNG in 2020 are now working for this foreign-owned fossil fuel company. Woodfibre LNG is a megaproject in disguise. The scope of this project keeps growing, and the cumulative impacts have never been properly assessed. Our communities are on the frontlines and we're already experiencing the impacts of this foreign-owned fossil fuel export project. Instead of building permanent housing for its workers, Woodfibre LNG has opted to spend $200 million dollars on two temporary floating workcamps that leave no lasting legacy for Squamish. Woodfibre LNG promises to "bring economic benefits to Squamish, British Columbia, and Canada" but is suing the District of Squamish over paying $1.5 million dollars in taxes during construction. After operating its first floating workcamp for over a year without a municipal permit, I am worried that this lawsuit has been used to strong-arm the District of Squamish into approving the Temporary Use Permit for both floating workcamps. In the last year, Woodfibre LNG has received multiple warnings of non-compliance for failing to comply with the conditions of its environmental assessment certificate. The Provincial government acknowledged in 2018 that the professional reliance approach has failed us, and that science that is bought and paid for by the proponent cannot be trusted. Yet, this process still relies on science and reports that are bought and paid for by Woodfibre LNG, and locked away with no transparency or opportunity for public scrutiny. The approval of a second floating workcamp intended to accelerate construction of a new fossil fuel export facility is contrary to the recent International Court of Justice ruling that: “Failure of the state to take appropriate action to protect the climate system from GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions including through fossil fuel production, fossil fuel consumption, the granting of fossil fuel exploration licenses, or the provision of fossil fuel subsidies may constitute an internationally wrongful act which is attributable to that state.” Given the ongoing provincial government support for LNG export projects, it's clear that this environmental assessment process is nothing but a rubber stamp.
