Women of Squamish First Nation protest proposed Woodfibre LNG plant this Sunday

“We will let our community, leaders, and government know that we will not support the re-industrialization of our Howe Sound” says Skwomesh Action founder Joyce Williams

SQUAMISH, BC, March 25, 2015 – A group of Squamish First Nation women ‘Skwomesh Action’ will stand in protest at Nexen Beach at noon this coming Sunday, March 29th. The group has partnered with community group My Sea to Sky to organize the largest protest of the proposed Woodfibre LNG terminal to date.

Over 450 people have pre-registered as of March 25th and the numbers continue to rise. “We are very grateful the event has so far been well received. I know that there are a lot of people that share our vision for our territory. This is a time for us all to come together to voice that we want a healthy Howe Sound full of life.” says Williams.

The Squamish First Nation is undertaking its own Environmental Assessment process at this time. “Having our rally during this process will show our leaders how many of us are opposed to the proposed Woodfibre LNG project. At the Squamish Nation meeting's regarding Woodfibre LNG we had a majority of people in attendance voice that they are against the project.”

This march is an opportunity for all First Nations and Non-First Nations people to support the Squamish People in defending their territory.

My Sea to Sky Co-Founder, Melyssa Desilles, states “It is an honour to join Skwomesh Action in solidarity as they stand up to defend their traditional territory from Woodfibre LNG. Howe Sound has been the homeland of the Squamish People for thousands of years. We all know what is at stake and what we have to lose. We call on everyone to stand with us on March 29th. We are all in this boat together.”

The rally will begin at 12pm at Nexen Beach in Squamish. At 1pm the group will march together in a peaceful protest terminating at the offices of Woodfibre LNG and FortisBC on Cleveland Avenue in Squamish.
