Key concerns raised by residents so far...
- Adverse change of course: In 2015, BC Hydro informed residents of their plan to use the existing 500 kV line adjacent to the Woodfibre Site. Why are they not sticking with this plan?
- Property impacts. Devaluation of properties. Restrictions on use of properties. Loss of use of properties while construction is done. Residential accessory infrastructures will have to be removed. Loss of trees, biodiversity and privacy.
- Construction disruption (duration, access, new road through properties, possible low flying level helicopter use)
- Health considerations including electromagnetic exposure
- Uncertainty around restoration after construction and installation
- Environmental and ecological impacts to sensitive wildlife habitat
- Potential for future expansion and increasing power demand
- BC Hydro is relying on an outdated Right-of-Way established in 1957 and purchased for $900—long before modern development—now running through 40 private properties valued at approximately $1.5 million each (~$60,000,000).
- Who pays? In 2014, Woodfibre LNG promised to pay for the costs of this transmission line, but past examples suggest costs may shift to ratepayers and taxpayers.
Your participation is crucial to ensure our community’s voice is heard.
Thanks for taking action.
