Sue Big Oil Pemberton!
October 11, 2024
Erich Baumann
Climate change is expensive. Yet the world's biggest oil and gas polluters are not paying their fair share of climate change costs. That's why we're partnering with the amazing folks at West Coast Environmental Law on their campaign to Sue Big Oil.
On Tuesday October 22nd, Pemberton council will consider whether to work together with other BC local governments to support a class action lawsuit to make the world’s largest polluters pay for a fair share of our communities’ climate change costs. Nine BC municipalities have already pledged support to Sue Big Oil, including Squamish, Gibsons, and Sechelt, and many more are considering joining.
Pemberton is vulnerable to costly climate change impacts including extreme heat waves, wildfires, drought, floods, landslides, and biodiversity loss. The cost of protecting our community from climate change is expected to be in the hundreds of millions if we don’t spend what it takes to avoid climate disasters.
Taxpayers shouldn’t have to foot the entire bill; Big Oil & Gas should pay their fair share.

Hold fossil fuel companies accountable
The world’s biggest polluters have known for decades that their products would cause devastating climate change impacts, yet they continue to spread climate misinformation and block climate action while reaping trillions of dollars in revenue. It’s time they paid their fair share for the harms they’ve caused, so that they have an incentive to invest in a more sustainable future.
Supporting the initiative to Sue Big Oil is an important step towards climate justice.
Please take action to encourage Pemberton Council to protect our community while holding fossil fuel companies accountable.
For the climate!
