Yesterday, I was honoured to stand with Indigenous leaders and representatives from organizations across BC to launch the BC Climate Emergency Campaign's 2024 Progress Report.

As lead author, it is a privilege to work with this amazing team of over 30 expert contributors, to evaluate the BC Government's implementation of ten urgent climate actions.

Our key finding for 2024: Initial progress has stalled and emissions are rising as BC continues to subsidize and expand new fossil fuel infrastructure at the expense of everyday people and future generations.

BC is not the climate leader it claims to be

While other countries around the world are rapidly reducing emissions, BC's emissions keep going up and are now 26% above 1990 levels. In contrast, the European Union's emissions are 36% below 1990 levels, and decreased by 8% in 2023 demonstrating that rapid emissions reductions are possible.

As new LNG export projects come online, BC's emissions will climb even higher, locking in climate pollution for decades.

Power for the people... not polluting LNG exports

The BC government plans to use BC's limited clean electricity to electrify the oil and gas sector. This could result in a multi-billion dollar public subsidy to greenwash fossil fuels.

BC announced yesterday that it is fast-tracking the permitting for a new $3 billion transmission line for LNG projects.

How LNG will increase your energy bills

If LNG projects are provided with public power at discount rates, all BC Hydro ratepayers will effectively be subsidizing these massive fossil fuel export projects.

Natural gas prices are also going up 17.5 percent this month to pay for new pipelines, and prices will increase further when BC starts to export LNG later this year. Both the U.S. and Australia saw significant increases in domestic gas prices when these countries started exporting LNG.

People across BC are already struggling to make ends meet. LNG exports will make life even more unaffordable.

Take action! Meet with your MLA!

Climate change is already impacting hundreds of thousands of British Columbians and costing us billions but we keep hearing from MLAs that "no one cares about climate change."

They need to hear from you! Can you meet with your MLA to deliver a copy of the 2024 Progress Report and demand that they commit to urgent climate action and stop subsidizing fossil fuels?

Meeting with your MLA can feel intimidating, so we're hosting two "How to meet with your MLA" training sessions on zoom. We also have a handy toolkit for people that sign up.
