FortisBC pipeline and compressor station amendment
FortisBC has applied for an amendment to its Environmental Assessment Certificate, and the public comment period started last week (deadline = 23rd December).
We are putting together a team of researchers to review the proposed changes (email info@myseatosky.org if you can help), and will share our key concerns soon.
Here's what we know so far:
- FortisBC is proposing to move the compressor station from Mt Mulligan to the Woodfibre site. This is an improvement, and it's all thanks to the Valleycliffe residents that have expressed concern about the Mt Mulligan location since 2015. FortisBC is finally listening.
- The compressor station at Woodfibre will be powered by three fracked gas turbine compressor units, that will increase air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. This is unacceptable given that every single person is being asked to immediately reduce their personal greenhouse gas emissions, while FortisBC is planning to pollute for 40+ years. There is access to BC Hydro electricity at the site—why isn't FortisBC using it?
- The 24-inch high-pressure pipeline to Woodfibre LNG has been re-routed behind Ravens Plateau, along Finch Drive, and through the Industrial Park in Squamish. These areas have a lot of new homes and businesses, and FortisBC is recklessly putting people's lives at risk.
- FortisBC is planning to drill a 9 km tunnel underneath the Squamish estuary, with drilling taking place for up to 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for two to three years. This noise will impact everyone that lives or works in the Industrial Park, Dentville, and Yekwaupsum neighbourhoods.
- A new 3 km section of 24-inch high-pressure pipeline is proposed in Coquitlam near the Westwood Plateau neighbourhood, along with upgrades to the existing compressor station.
- If you are a FortisBC customer, YOU will be paying for this pipeline. The former BC government ordered the BC Utilities Commission to allow FortisBC to pass on the cost of building this pipeline to you. This is yet another subsidy for Woodfibre LNG and FortisBC.

We have a team of three expert lawyers evaluating whether we have a case to challenge the recent five-year extension for Woodfibre LNG through a judicial review. Our community has raised an amazing $15K in two weeks, but we're still $5K short.
