What is a Witness Ceremony?

In Coast Salish culture, witnesses are called for events of historical significance. These witnesses are keepers of history, and share the story of what they witness with their families and communities when they return home. This was a form of a living newspaper.

Squamish Nation Elder, Tiaoutenaat Jackie Williams, will be calling honoured and respected knowledge keepers as witnesses at the rally. Traditionally, there are no timelines in ceremony, but we will do our best to stick to the itinerary above.

Why is this important?

For over ten years, Woodfibre LNG and FortisBC have lied about the impacts of their projects to our climate, our health, our safety, our economy, and our environment. But it's not too late for the BC government to cancel the permits for this destructive new fossil fuel infrastructure, and end the subsidies and tax breaks.

Climate impacts (adding fuel to the fire)

LNG is fracked methane, a fossil fuel that creates more greenhouse gases than coal. Building new LNG infrastructure will lock in extreme climate pollution for decades, at a time when we need to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

Health impacts (flarestacks)

Doctors are warning that BC's LNG export industry is harming our healthcare system. Flaring of excess gas from Woodfibre LNG (and FortisBC's compressor station) will increase local air pollution, putting people that live in nearby communities at risk.

Safety impacts (explosions)

FortisBC's 24-inch high pressure gas pipeline passes through neighbourhoods in Squamish and Coquitlam, putting residents at risk.

Woodfibre LNG is not following the strict international guidelines for LNG carriers. If a worst-case scenario accident happens, people that live within 1.6 km of the LNG tanker route are at risk of death by asphyxiation, fire, or explosion.

Economic impacts (burning our tax dollars)

Woodfibre LNG is a scam. This project is not economically viable without massive subsidies and tax breaks. LNG exports in the USA and Australia have increased home energy costs. Why are we subsidizing new fossil fuel infrastructure when everyday British Columbians are already struggling to make ends meet?

Environmental impacts

Water pollution, noise pollution, and light pollution from Woodfibre LNG threaten wildlife and the precious ecosystems of Átl’ka7tsem / Howe Sound.
